Antique Japanese Imari Cat - 19th Century Meiji Period (27 cms high)

This captivating antique Japanese Imari cat is a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship of the Meiji period (1868-1912). Standing at an impressive 27 centimetres tall, this feline figurine is adorned with the vibrant colors and intricate designs characteristic of Imari ware. The cat's body is lavishly decorated with a floral motif in underglaze blue, iron red, and gold, creating a striking visual display.

The base of the cat features a six-character mark, further authenticating its provenance and historical significance. This mark, along with the meticulous detailing and use of traditional Imari colours, suggests that this piece was created by skilled artisans during the Meiji era.

The mark reads:
義謙堂製
龍筆製

Translation:
義謙堂製 (Giken-dō Sei): Made by Giken-dō
龍筆製 (Ryūhitsu Sei): Made by Ryūhitsu

This indicates that the cat figurine was produced by the Giken-dō workshop in Kyoto, Japan, known for producing high-quality Imari ware during the Meiji period. They were particularly famous for their intricate designs, vibrant colors, and skilled craftsmanship.  'Ryūhitsu':  This could be the name of the artist who painted the cat figurine.
This mark provides valuable information about the origin and maker of the cat figurine. It adds to the authenticity and historical value of the piece.
